Parliament opens 25th session

  • Possibly final session before election
  • President on October 5 summoned session

The 25th session of the 11th parliament went into session on Sunday for possibly the final time before the upcoming general election.

The session began at 4:05pm with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on October 5 summoned the 25th session of the 11th parliament exercising the power bestowed upon him according to Clause (1) of Article 72 of the constitution.

On September 14, the 24th session of the current parliament was prorogued after nine sittings.

The 11th parliament is going to fulfil its five-year term on January 29, 2024; it went into its first session on January 30, 2019.

So the next general election will have to be held within 90 days before January 29 in the case of the dissolution of parliament by reason of the expiration of its term, in accordance with Article 123 of the constitution.
