How do MPs resign?

BNP lawmakers have been threatening to resign since October

Update : 11 Dec 2022, 11:57 AM

All seven BNP lawmakers are set to resign from Parliament on Sunday, a day after they made the announcement at its Dhaka mass rally held on Golapbagh playground.

They have been threatening to step down as MPs since October when the party was holding its divisional rallies.

According to Section 67(2) of the Constitution, a member of parliament may resign his/her seat by writing under his/her hand addressed to the speaker, and the seat shall become vacant when the writing is received by the speaker or, if the office of speaker is vacant or the speaker is for any reason unable to perform his/her functions, by the deputy speaker.

After a resignation comes into effect, the Election Commission holds by-polls to the vacant seat within 90 days.

BNP MPs receive remuneration and other benefits as members of parliament, as do other lawmakers, since they were directly elected in the elections held on December 30, 2018.

Of them, reserved seat MP Rumeen Farhana on Saturday said she had already sent her resignation to the parliament speaker via email and would submit her handwritten resignation letter on Sunday.

On the other hand, Gulam Mohammad Siraj, the BNP lawmaker from Bogra-6, said: "I submitted my resignation letter to the acting chairman of the party at the Standing Committee meeting last Friday. We will not go to parliament again."

The other BNP parliamentarians announcing their resignations are Md Zahidur Rahman from Thakurgaon-3, Md Mosharof Hosen from Bogra-4, Md Harunur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3 and Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan from Brahmanbaria-2.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune in late October, Harunur Rashid and Rumeen Farhana said they would follow the decision of the party leadership and resign from parliament.

Asked if their resignations may hurt the country as they would not be there to raise important issues in parliament, the BNP leaders said their party would decide whether their resignations were beneficial or not.
