Parliamentary panel wants public harassment by transgender people stopped

Panel also recommends providing ID cards to transgender people by identifying them through medical exam

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare Ministry on Thursday suggested taking necessary steps to protect the public from the harassment of transgender (hijra) people after discussion with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The parliamentary watchdog made the recommendation at its 19th meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with Chairman Rashed Khan Menon in the chair, said a press release.

They also recommended providing identity cards (IDs) to transgender people by identifying them through medical examination.

The issues including progress of the decisions taken at the 18th meeting, the steps taken by the Ministry of Social Welfare to increase sports facilities for children with disabilities, and the measures taken to improve living standards of the Bede community were also discussed in the meeting.

The parliament members recommended sending a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to know the progress of the ground construction work on the land allotted for the use of disabled students as a playground on the west side of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

State Minister for Social Welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru also attended the meeting on special invitation.

Social Committee members Bodruddoza Md Farhad Hossain, AKM Sarwar Jahan, Aroma Dutta and Shabnam Jahan joined it.
