Parliament’s 9th session begins after 59-day recess

Speaker nominated five-member panel of chairmen for the 9th session

The ninth session of the 11th parliament has begun after a 59-day recess as the last (budget) session was prorogued on July 9 last.

The parliament session began with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair at 11:05am on Sunday.

Health protocols are being maintained since the session resumed amid the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The speaker began the session by nominated a five-member panel of chairmen for the 9th session of the 11th parliament.

The panel members are ASM Firoz, M Motahar Hossain, Narayan Chandra Chanda, Kazi Firoz Rashid and Simin Hossain Rimi.

The speaker announced their names at the beginning of the day’s business.

They will conduct the House proceedings in chronological order in the absence of the speaker and the deputy speaker.

Earlier on August 19, President Abdul Hamid summoned the 9th session (4th session of 2020) of the 11th parliament exercising the power bestowed upon him as per Clause (1) of Article 72 of the Constitution.

The last session (budget) was prorogued after only nine sittings due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, which was the shortest budget session in Bangladesh history.

According to the Constitution, the gap between the end of a session of Parliament and the first sitting of the next session shall not exceed a period of 60 days.
