Update : 18 May 2020, 10:41 PM

The parliament budget session for the 2020-21 fiscal year is set to begin from June 10 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

President Abdul Hamid summoned the session, exercising power bestowed upon him by Article 72 (1) of the constitution, reports UNB.

The eighth budget session of the parliament will begin at 5pm, with Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in chair.

The budget for the next fiscal year will be challenging due to economic crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak. The International Monetary Fund said the global economy will contract by 3% this year, as countries around the world shrink at the fastest pace in decades.

IMF described the global decline as the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The government has been imposing a lockdown since March 26 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, shutting down all non-essential services and putting millions of people out of work. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced a series of stimulus packages to tackle the economic fallout of the virus outbreak.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. So far, the country has confirmed 23,870 cases and 349 deaths.
