Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam told parliament on Thursday that all Dhaka slums would be brought under legal and safe water coverage by December this year.

The minister said the government, in the last 10 years, has taken various initiatives to ensure safe water for all city residents as per its Vision 2021, reports UNB.

“All slums of the capital will be brought under legal and safe water coverage by December 2019, with the aim to implement the government’s vision: Safe Water for All,” he said while responding to a starred question placed by ruling party lawmaker Didarul Alam.

He also mentioned that Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) has taken up three water treatment plant projects to increase its capacity of producing safe water from surface sources, to reduce dependency on groundwater sources, by 2021.

"Once the projects are implemented, about 70% water of DWASA (water) will be produced from surface sources, while only 30% will come from groundwater sources," Tajul explained.

The minister also said that all the old pipelines of DWASA are being modernised to ensure safe and pressurised water supply in Dhaka city.
