Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said the development work to upgrade the Dhaka-Sylhet highway into a four-lane one will begin soon.
The minister came up with the announcement while responding to a query in the parliament on Wednesday, reports BSS.
He said the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways have already been turned into four lanes, and work to similarly upgrade the Dhaka-Tangail highway is almost over.
Currently, work on upgrading the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga and Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur highways into four-lane ones is continuing, Quader added.
A feasibility study and the detailed design of the development work on the country's 1,752km of highways have already been completed under a project titled "Sub-regional road transport project preparatory facilities".
The minister informed the House that there are around 21,595km of highways across the country under the Roads and Highway Department.
