BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s Bogra 6 parliamentary constituency has been declared vacant, because he failed to take oath in due time.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury made the announcement in parliament on Tuesday.
The 11th parliament formed through the general election on December 30, 2018, went into its maiden session on January 30.
According to Article 67 of the Constitution, a Member of Parliament shall vacate his seat if he or she fails to take oath or affirm to do so within 90 days of date of the first meeting of parliament after election.
Monday (April 29) was the last day for taking oath, under constitutional provisions.
Earlier in the day, the speaker said she is yet to receive a letter from MP-elect Fakhrul seeking time extension to take oath.
In a press briefing in the morning, BNP Secretary General Fakhrul said his decision to not take oath as an MP was part of his party's political strategy.
The BNP leader also said he did not sent a letter to the speaker requesting her to extend the time for taking his oath as an MP.
The BNP-led Jatiya Oikyafront secured eight seats out of 300 in the last parliamentary election. Of those, BNP got six, while its ally Gono Forum bagged two.
Among them, all the Jatiya Oikya Front MPs-elect except Mirza Fakhrul Islam took oath as MPs within the stipulated time.
