After a landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election on December 30, the  Awami League is now about to finalize the selection for the 43 reserved parliamentary seats for women.

Awami League (AL) Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap told the Dhaka Tribune the party will consider candidates who are committed to the party ideology and has worked for the party for years.

“The Awami League always nominates the popular and devoted politicians. Like others, the AL will pick candidates for reserved seats who are ready to make sacrifices for the party and can uphold the party ideology,” he said.

Lawmakers are scheduled to vote for the aspiring candidates on February 3, the Election Commission announced on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, AL Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman said: “Aspirants who have made sacrifices for the party, participated in party activities, are sincerely committed to the Awami League and are popular among political leaders and people, will get the nomination,” adding that the Awami League will pick the best candidates for the reserved seats.

Talking with the Dhaka Tribune two members of AL parliamentary board said several female lawmakers who served in the previous terms may not be picked due to their age while few will get party nods for their unparalleled commitment to the party.

A total 1,510 aspiring female candidates have collected Awami League nomination forms for reserved seats. 62 of them come from the silver screen including several famous actresses.

According to AL sources this is the highest number of female aspirants for the reserved seat in the history of the party.
