The “Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Act, 2018” has been placed in parliament, incorporating provisions of more severe punishment in the existing law.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu placed the bill on Sunday, which was then sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for further examination, reports UNB.
The committee was asked to submit a report within two days.
The proposed law has been formulated to make the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Ordinance, 1985, a more time-befitting one.
According to the draft law, the use of a trademark without a licence will be considered an offence. For committing such an offence, the offender will have to suffer a maximum of two years in jail or pay a fine of Tk25,000-Tk 1 lakh, or both.
There is a provision of four years' imprisonment or a maximum Tk 2 lakh and minimum Tk 50,000 fine, or both, for exporting products violating government circulars on export, distribution and marketing, and for commercial advertisement of banned products.
Besides, a provision of one year's imprisonment or maximum Tk 50,000 and minimum Tk 10,000 fine for exporting any product violating export conditions is also in the draft.
The proposed law has a provision of one year's imprisonment or Tk 25,000 fine or both, for violating any of the rules and regulations formulated under the proposed law as well as for the offences not covered by the mentioned sections.
