The shootout took place early Wednesday, reports UNB. The identity of the robber could not be confirmed.
Sadar police station OC Yeasinul Hoque said they moved towards Jangalbahula area around 3:30am following a tip-off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire at them and police retaliated to them as well triggering a gunfight.
A robber fell in the line of fire and died instantly while others managed to flee the scene, the OC also said.
Police sent the corpse to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Five policemen were also injured in the incident. Police recovered seven lethal weapons from the spot.
