According to the family, a police patrol team led by Kaliganj police’s Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Touhidur Rahman picked up Jahangir Alam, 23, in the dead of night on October 28 from his in-law’s house in Paikpara village under the upazila.
He was reportedly taken away without given any explanations and blindfolded in lock-up.
The family also accused the ASI of torturing Jahangir with bamboo fetters and thrashing the sole of his feet with canes. Jahangir was also reportedly hit in his knees and other joints as well during torture.
When his family went to the police station to get him out, police claimed that he was arrested in a woman-related crime that was not elaborated upon. The family claimed that Jahangir was not involved in any such matter.
His father, Mirazul Haque claimed that ASI Touhidur demanded a large bribe for releasing Jahangir which was duly met.
Jahangir, a student of DU’s social welfare department, is now being treated at a local hospital.
He told the Dhaka Tribune that police arrested him without just cause and tortured him mercilessly.
He also said that ASI Touhidur threatened him with an encounter if he did not admit to the charges.
ASI Touhidur, when asked by this correspondent, initially denied detaining Jahangir. Later he admitted but said that he was only picked up for questioning regarding a matter that involved his wife. He denied all allegations of torture.
