Voting was underway in 11 unions under the Sadar, Parshuram and Fulgazi upazilas on Monday morning. As of 9:30am, the presence of voters and polling agents at the centres was minimal, but Awami League supporters crowded outside the centres.
The clash took place between supporters of the Awami League-backed and the rebel candidate in Dharmapur union. At least eight people were hit by bullets in the clash while two cars were set on fire.
Polls are being held in Sadar's Baligaon and Dharmapur, Fulgazi's Sadar, Munsirhat, Amzadhat, Anandapur and Darbarpur unions and Parshuram's Mirzanagar, Chithalia and Bakshmahmud unions.
Voters have expressed concerns about free and fair polling in the district. However, Superintendent of Police Rezaul Haque said adequate number of law enforcement officials had been posted at each centre to ensure a peaceful vote.
