Two suspected robbers have been killed in separate incidents of “gunfights” with police in Kushtia.
The deceased are Sobhan Ali, 37, son of Nur Uddin of Kumarkhali Monoharpur area and Hassanuzzaman Lalon, 35, son of Alim Uddin of Gangnir Monohordia village.
Meanwhile, seven policemen were injured in the incidents.
Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joinul Abedin said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in Baradi area to arrest the robbers around 4am on Wednesday.
“Sensing our presence, the robbers opened fire targeting us.”
In retaliation, police fired back that left Sobhan dead while his associates managed to flee the scene. Four policemen were also injured in the incident.
He said Sobhan is an accused in eight cases filed with different police stations.
Meanwhile, two firearms, two rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot.
Lalon was killed in another gunfight when police conducted a drive in Bheramara Doshmile area in the early hours of the day.
ASP Joinul said: “Three policemen were also injured in the incident.
“We have recovered a firearm, one round of bullet and saw from the spot.”
