Continued rainfall keeps taking its toll in districts

In the wake of the incessant rainfall for the past few days, parts of the country, mostly the low-lying ares, have been inundated with road communication halted in many areas. In Bandarban, several hundred have been submerged as the water level of Sangu river has gone up due to flash flood. Road communication from the hill district to Chittagong and Rangamati remained snapped, causing immense sufferings to the commuters. With the situation worsening, people living in hills slopes and foothills started moving to shelter centres fearing landslide. Meanwhile, Khagrachhari district administration has already relocated 19 families to shelter centres amid a growing fear of landslide. The authorities concerned are continuing their campaign using loudspeakers to urge the people living in landslide-prone areas to move to safe zones. Our local correspondent reported that the markets and busy intersections in the Khagrachhari town is almost deserted. Even communication through roads from the Khagrachhari to its Mohalchhari upazila and Rangamati district came to halt following the rainfall of the last four days till Monday. The situation has left scores of low-income people, mainly the transport workers unemployed. The ordeal of Khulna people have also been deepening for the last couple of days. Khulna City Corporation's (KCC) Conservancy Officer MD Anisur Rahman said they were working to get rid of the waterlogging problem in the city. Once the drains are cleaned and the filled-up canals are excavated, the waterlogging will reduce significantly, he hoped. When contacted, KCC Mayor Md Maniruzzaman said the situation will become normal after the water level of Bhairab river drops.
