The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Teachers’ Association announced an all-out work stoppage on Thursday night, demanding the reinstatement of Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as vice-chancellor.
The association said activities related to residential halls and emergency services will remain operational during the work stoppage.
On Friday, students brought out a procession after Friday prayers, demanding the reinstatement of Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as vice-chancellor.
An emergency meeting of the CUET Teachers’ Association was held on the Zoom platform at 9:30pm on Thursday. Members unanimously decided to begin a full work stoppage that night and demanded Sayem’s reinstatement.
The association also said completely false, baseless and defamatory information was being circulated on various social media platforms about its members. It condemned and protested against the activities.
Professor Mohammad Ahsan Ullah, president of the CUET Teachers’ Association, said: “We held our meeting. We are going on an all-out work stoppage demanding the reinstatement of Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as vice-chancellor. However, activities related to the residential halls and emergency services will remain operational.”
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the CUET Teachers’ Association held a press conference to announce its decisions and position. Leaders of the teachers’, officers’ and employees’ associations were present.
On the evening of September 21, a gazette notification was issued removing CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem and appointing Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) in his place.
Professor Sayem was appointed vice-chancellor of CUET on July 27. Students began demonstrating that night against his removal after 56 days in office, while the CUET Teachers’ Association expressed solidarity with the movement.
