The case was filed under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code, with 4 people named as accused and another 20–25 unidentified people accused.

All 4 named accused are students of Khulna University.

He said no one had been arrested in the case as of Saturday night.

According to the first information report, Azmul was beaten at a mess in Masjid Goli on Islamnagar Road, opposite Khulna University’s Khan Jahan Ali Hall, also known as Khaja Hall, after he was accused of theft.

At one point, he fell from the roof of the 4-storey building.

He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition and died while undergoing treatment.

According to police and local sources, Azmul ate food at the mess without giving a meal on Friday night. Angered by this and later accusing him of theft, several students of the mess and some local people beat him.

He later fell from the building and suffered serious injuries. Around 1:30am, several youths took Azmul to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Hospital sources said there were marks of injuries on different parts of his body. He died after being admitted while undergoing treatment.

Doctors initially suspected excessive blood loss but said the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report.

Azmul Hossain was a 1st-year student of the English Department at North Western University. His home was in Bara Sholua village under Darshana police station in Chuadanga.

He lived in a rented mess in Masjid Goli in the area adjacent to Khulna University.

Meanwhile, Azmul’s family alleged that a phone call was made to them during the incident demanding Tk 100,000. The phone was later found switched off.

Police said they were verifying the allegation.
