Several people were injured while rushing to evacuate after a fire broke out in an elevator of the new building at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Monday evening.
The fire broke out around 6pm, Mymensingh Sadar Fire Service Station Officer Julhaz Uddin told Dhaka Tribune.
He said a unit from the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Fire Station responded after receiving the report and brought the fire under control. However, heavy smoke was still coming out of the elevator.
“The immediate cause of the fire is not known. However, chaos was created as people rushed to come down, and several people were injured after falling,” Julhaz said.
He added that another team from the Sadar Fire Station was on its way to the hospital and that the cause of the fire would be determined after it was completely brought under control.
Hospital Assistant Director (Administration) Dr Mohammad Main Uddin Khan said the fire was initially believed to have originated from the elevator machinery.
“The situation at the hospital is currently completely normal. Medical services are also continuing normally,” he said.
He said an investigation committee would be formed to determine the actual cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
