President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited his hometown Thakurgaon on Sunday for the first time since taking office, where he paid respects at his parents’ graves and attended a civic reception.
He was scheduled to arrive by helicopter at the helipad of Thakurgaon Mohammad Ali Stadium at 11:40am but reached the venue around 1pm.
From the stadium, he went to the Thakurgaon District Circuit House, where he received a guard of honor before visiting Senua graveyard to pay respects at his parents’ graves.
The president waved to people gathered along the roads as he traveled through the city.
A civic reception is scheduled for the president at the historic Boro Math of Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School in the afternoon. People from across the district are expected to attend.
The city has been decorated ahead of the visit, with banners, festoons, arches and lighting installed along major roads, key intersections and entry points.
Residents have expressed pride at seeing someone from Thakurgaon serving as the head of state.
Security has also been tightened across the district, with increased surveillance at important installations, roads and program venues. A large number of law enforcement personnel have been deployed along the president’s route.
On Monday, the president will lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.
