Thakurgaon, the birthplace of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, erupted in celebration after reports that he had been finalized as the party’s candidate for Bangladesh’s 23rd presidential election.

Following a high-level BNP meeting on Thursday, news of Fakhrul’s nomination quickly spread across the district. Party activists and local residents gathered at the BNP office and his ancestral home in Kalibari. Supporters organized celebratory processions, distributed sweets and exchanged greetings, turning parts of the town into a festive scene.

Fakhrul became involved in politics as a student at Dhaka University. He later worked as a college teacher before entering local politics and being elected chairman of Thakurgaon Municipality. He subsequently served as a member of parliament, state minister and full minister.

Over more than a decade of political turbulence, Fakhrul played a significant role in keeping the BNP organized and united. His political career also included periods of imprisonment amid the party’s prolonged political struggles.

Residents described his nomination as a major achievement not only for Thakurgaon but also for the wider northern region.

Prof Abu Bakar Siddique, former principal of Thakurgaon Government Women’s College, described Fakhrul as one of the region’s most distinguished figures. He expressed hope that development initiatives for Thakurgaon would receive greater momentum if Fakhrul assumes the presidency.

Dr ABM Khairul Kabir, president of the Thakurgaon chapter of the Bangladesh Medical Association and a former director of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, said Fakhrul’s achievement was a source of pride for the entire northern region.

District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin said the family was deeply moved, calling the nomination recognition of Fakhrul’s lifelong sacrifice, dedication and integrity.

Residents expressed hope that, if elected president, Fakhrul would strengthen democratic institutions and help reflect the hopes and aspirations of ordinary citizens.
