A total of 121 families of children engaged in child labour have received financial assistance in Khulna under a conditional support programme, requiring the children to enroll in school. Several of the beneficiaries have already resumed their education.
Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdullah Harun distributed the grants at a programme organized by World Vision Bangladesh at the Divisional Commissioner’s Office on Tuesday. The beneficiaries came from eight wards of Khulna City Corporation, with each family receiving Tk 10,000.
World Vision Bangladesh said the initiative is designed to reduce child labour by easing financial hardship while ensuring children return to classrooms. The organization has previously provided similar conditional cash assistance to hundreds of families in Khulna and neighbouring districts and continues to monitor compliance with programme conditions.
Addressing the event, Abdullah Harun said financial support alone would not eradicate child labour and called for more effective measures to address the issue.
He stressed that parents must take responsibility for their children's education and welfare, saying that many children leave school because they are pushed into work by their families.
He also emphasized that lasting progress would require changes in parental attitudes alongside stronger interventions to keep children in school and protect them from exploitative labour.
