Two people died of dengue in Sylhet and Khulna over the last 24 hours until 8am on Monday.
Sylhet has recorded its first dengue-related death of this year after 54-year-old Afia Khanam died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. It is the first confirmed dengue fatality in the Sylhet division in 2026.
Assistant Director of the Sylhet Health Department, Dr. Nur-e-Alam Shamim, said the patient also suffered from heart disease and hypertension. He added that public awareness campaigns are being intensified to help prevent further infections.
According to the Health Department's daily dengue report released on Monday, two new dengue cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of infections in the division to 111. One patient was diagnosed at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and the other at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.
Currently, five dengue patients are receiving treatment at hospitals across the division. Since January 1, Sylhet has reported 24 cases, Sunamganj 21, Habiganj 52, and Moulvibazar 11, while three patients from other districts also received treatment in Sylhet division hospitals.
Besides, the death toll from dengue in Khulna Division has risen to 10 this year after one more patient died while undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, health officials said.
During the same period, 67 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, bringing the total number of patients currently receiving treatment across the division to 196, according to the latest report issued by Directorate of Health.
Dr. Sheikh Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Director (Health) of Khulna Division, said the new admissions included 14 in Khulna district, 26 at Khulna Medical College Hospital, two in Bagerhat, six in Jessore, three in Jhenaidah, five in Narail and one at Satkhira Medical College Hospital.
Between January 1 and August 3, a total of 2,219 dengue patients were hospitalized across the division. Of them, 1,988 have recovered and been discharged, while 25 were referred to other hospitals for advanced treatment.
Of the 10 dengue-related deaths recorded this year, nine occurred at Khulna Medical College Hospital, including three patients from Khulna, while one death was reported in Bagerhat.
