Heavy rainfall has damaged a section of the approach to a bridge by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at Shyamar Ghat on the Tangail–Hugra road in Tangail Sadar upazila, making vehicular movement risky.
On Sunday afternoon, LGED Executive Engineer Jahanara Parvin, who recently joined the district, inspected the damaged bridge approach and said repairs would be carried out soon.
According to residents, a section of the bridge approach collapsed during the current monsoon season due to heavy rainfall, creating risks for vehicles crossing the bridge.
The bridge is used daily by thousands of people from Hugra, Dyenna, Katuli and Kakua in the char areas of Tangail Sadar upazila, as well as Chauhali in Sirajganj district. Residents said the same section of the approach had collapsed several times in the past and called for a permanent solution.
After being informed about the damage, Jahanara Parvin visited the site and inspected the affected area.
She said: “The bridge approach was damaged due to heavy rainfall. After the inspection, the matter has been reported to the higher authorities. We hope the repairs will be completed quickly so that the bridge becomes suitable for vehicular movement.”
LGED Sub-Assistant Engineer Mostafizur Rahman and other department officials were present during the inspection.
The bridge was constructed around 15 years ago to improve transportation for residents of the surrounding char areas.
