Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, an eminent agricultural scientist, joined the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) as Acting Director General on Wednesday. His appointment was made through an official order issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Prior to taking over the new responsibility, Dr Rafiqul Islam served as BRRI’s Director (Research) with additional charge and also held the position of Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Soil Science Division.
He began his career at BRRI in 1998 as a Scientific Officer and has served the institute with distinction for the past 28 years in various scientific and administrative positions, said a press release.
Born in Haluakandi village under Kamarkhanda upazila of Sirajganj, Dr. Islam earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, in 1992. He later obtained his MS degree in Soil Science from Gazipur Agricultural University in 2003 and completed his PhD in 2012.
More than 80 of his research articles have been published in renowned journals at home and abroad. In connection with research activities, he has visited various countries, including England, Scotland, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Singapore, and India.
