The body of a Bangladeshi student, Shahriar Ahmed Emon, 22, was recovered from a buried grave in Cyprus nine days after he went missing, police said. Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the incident.

Cyprus police recovered the body on Sunday, while confirmation was given on Tuesday by family members of the deceased and Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Masud Rana.

The UNO said the administration would extend all possible assistance if the victim’s family sought support in this regard.

The deceased Emon was the son of Nasir Uddin, a Greece-based expatriate from Lochanpur village under Uttar Bakharnagar union in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.

Family sources said Emon went to Cyprus on a student visa four months ago and lived in a rented house in the Oroklini area. Alongside his studies, he worked part-time at a factory in Kofinou. He went missing on June 12 while leaving home for work.

On the night of his disappearance, Emon shared his live location with a friend via a mobile app. After that, all communication with him was lost.

Later, an unidentified person allegedly used his phone to send a WhatsApp message to his father demanding €35,000 in ransom. A Cypriot media outlet published a screenshot of the message.

Family members said they later agreed to pay Tk5 lakh, after initially being asked for a higher ransom. However, communication from the abductors stopped shortly after.

Emon’s uncle, Al Farooq, alleged that a gang had abducted him and demanded ransom.

“We could not arrange the full amount. We finally agreed to pay Tk5 lakh, but after the matter became known, they went underground after killing him,” he said, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved and the repatriation of the body.
