Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkot Ali has expressed regret over the alleged detention, assault and harassment of Bangladesh national cricket team cplayer Nayeem Hasan by individuals posing as Detective Branch (DB) police.

Speaking to journalists after visiting Nayeem Hasan’s residence in the Faridar Para area of Bahaddarhat in Chittagong city on Saturday, the CMP commissioner said he personally heard a detailed account of the incident from the cricketer and assured strict action against those involved.

During the visit, the commissioner also held a private discussion with Nayeem Hasan and spoke with members of his family.

“I have heard the detailed account of the incident from Mr Nayeem. Strict action will be taken against the police members involved in this incident. Already, two personnel involved have been suspended,” he said.

He identified the suspended personnel as sub-inspector Shafiqul Islam and constable Russell.

“This is not just suspension; the maximum punishment will be ensured,” he said.

The CMP commissioner said Bangladesh Police will not tolerate unprofessional conduct from any member of the force.

“Bangladesh Police will not spare anyone involved in unprofessional behavior. The police department will not take responsibility for any individual officer’s unprofessional actions. That responsibility lies with the individual,” he added.

Responding to allegations of misconduct by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulshi Police Station involving Nayeem Hasan, the CMP chief said a full investigation has been launched.

“We will investigate all matters. A three-member committee has been formed. The entire incident will be investigated. Immediate measures have already been taken, and we will ensure maximum action,” he said.

He added that departmental cases will be filed against all individuals involved in the team, and further steps will be taken after the investigation committee submits its report.
