Workers of Noble Cotton and Spinning Mills in Rupganj, Narayanganj blocked the Dhaka–Sylhet highway on Wednesday, demanding payment of overdue wages.
According to eyewitnesses, several hundred workers from the factory in the Jatramura area began the blockade around 10 am, bringing traffic to a standstill on both sides of the highway. The disruption lasted for hours, leaving passengers and drivers stranded in long queues stretching several kilometers.
The workers alleged that they had not received regular salaries for the past three months. They said repeated delays and excuses from the factory authorities forced them to take to the streets.
Members of the Narayanganj Industrial Police arrived at the scene to control the situation. After discussions with both the workers and factory management, officials assured the workers that steps would be taken to resolve the issue quickly.
Additional Superintendent of Police Wali Ullah said that after hearing the workers’ grievances and holding talks with the factory authorities, assurances were given regarding the payment of outstanding wages. Following this, the workers withdrew the blockade, and traffic resumed around 2:30 pm.
Factory Managing Director Mohammad Ali stated that essential raw materials, especially cotton, are expected to arrive on Thursday. He added that production will resume afterward, and discussions will be held with workers to settle the unpaid wages.
