Update : 02 May 2026, 10:10 PM

Thakurgaon Sugar Mill Workers’ Employees Union awarded “May Day Honours” to 15 past and present labor leaders, including founding General Secretary Mostafizur Rahman and former President and General Secretary Alauddin Khan, along with several deceased leaders.

Established in 1960 following the mill’s founding in 1958, the union marked its 66-year journey by reopening its long-abandoned two-story building from the Pakistan era. The function, held on Saturday morning to celebrate International Workers’ Day 2026, created an emotional atmosphere, bringing together past and current members.

Union President Abdul Kuddus and General Secretary Abdullah Al Mahmud Khan Ratan presented awards to living former leaders and to family members of the deceased leaders. A discussion meeting and rally were also organized.

Speakers emphasized protecting workers’ rights to sustain the sugar industry. They called for skill development through internal recruitment, fair promotions, and financial benefits for wage commission workers. They noted that proper utilization and modernization of sugar mills, including Thakurgaon, could turn the industry profitable and improve livelihoods tied to it.
