Workers of several sister concerns of Azim Group blocked a road in the C&B intersection area under Chandgaon Police Station in Chittagong city on Saturday, demanding payment of overdue wages.
The protest, which began around 11:00 am, caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the Bahaddarhat–Kalurghat Road and immense suffering for passengers. School and college students, office commuters, and SSC examinees were among those affected. As of 3:30 pm, the demonstration was ongoing.
A large number of male and female workers participated in the protests. Demonstrators alleged that their rightful dues have remained unpaid for a long time. They claimed that tiffin allowances have been pending since 2020, while overtime payments for 2022 and 2025 have not been cleared. Female workers said they are being deprived of maternity benefits.
Upon receiving the news, Industrial Police and Chandgaon Police rushed to the scene and began efforts to bring the situation under control.
Superintendent of Police of Chittagong Industrial Police, Abdullah Al Mahmud, said, “I am currently in Dhaka, but I am monitoring the situation. The workers staged the blockade due to disputes over unpaid wages. We are trying to resolve the issue quickly through discussions with both the workers and the factory owner. Police are also working to ease the traffic congestion.”
