Minister blames Awami League for economic crisis, vows austerity and reforms

The minister said efforts are underway to establish a corruption-free system and transform Bangladesh into a middle-income country within the next five years, despite limited resources

Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan has alleged that the Awami League government left the country’s economy in a fragile state due to widespread corruption. He said that despite efforts by Dr Muhammad Yunus during his 18-month interim leadership, the extent of the economic damage limited any meaningful recovery.

“The present government had to begin almost from zero,” he said while addressing an event held at Sakhipur Upazila Parishad hallroom in Tangail yesterday. The program focused on increasing Aus paddy cultivation and production, where farmers received free fertilizer and seeds, and livestock farmers were provided with necessary inputs.

The minister further said that under the direction of Tarique Rahman, the government is enforcing austerity measures across all sectors and has instructed officials to follow suit. “We are minimizing expenses—even avoiding air conditioner use in ministries and relying on fans,” he said. He expressed optimism that the country could achieve economic recovery and move toward self-reliance with collective public support.

Highlighting the government’s target, the minister said efforts are underway to establish a corruption-free system and transform Bangladesh into a middle-income country within the next five years, despite limited resources.

The event was chaired by Sakhipur UNO Abdullah Al Rony. Among those present were Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shamsun Nahar Shila, Officer-in-Charge of Sakhipur Police Station Md. Helal Uddin, and Livestock Officer Dr. Saidur Rahman.

A total of 250 marginal farmers received fertilizer and seeds, while 350 livestock farmers were given support materials to enhance productivity and skills.
