5 killed in lightning strikes in Sunamganj

Police confirmed the incidents and handed over the bodies to families after legal procedures

At least five people, including four farmers and a student, were killed in separate lightning strikes across four upazilas of Sunamganj district during sudden on Thursday afternoon storms. The incidents occurred in Pagnar, Matian, Tagar, and Baram haor areas while farmers were working in open fields.

The deceased were identified as Habibur Rahman (30) from Dharmapasha, Rahmat Ullah (15), Nazmul Hossain (19) from Jamalganj, Abul Kalam (25) from Tahirpur, and Liton Mia (30) from Dirai. According to local sources and police, heavy rain and lightning struck unexpectedly as farmers were harvesting paddy.

In Tahirpur, Abul Kalam was hit while working in Matian Haor and later declared dead at the Upazila Health Complex. In Jamalganj, Nur Jamal (26) was killed in Pagna Haor, while another person was injured. Dharmapasha reported two deaths, including Habibur Rahman and student Rahmat Ullah. In Dirai, Liton Mia died after being struck in Baram Haor.

Police confirmed the incidents and handed over the bodies to families after legal procedures. At least five others were injured and are receiving treatment. Lightning fatalities remain common in haor regions due to exposure in open fields.
