Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju has underscored ongoing efforts to make Khulna a green, clean, and dust-free city, calling for citizens’ active cooperation in achieving the goal.

Speaking as the chief guest at a roundtable titled “Strengthening Social Protection Programmes for Climate-Induced Migrants and Internally Displaced People” held on Wednesday at the Caritas Bangladesh regional office in Khulna, Manju highlighted initiatives to tackle persistent water logging issues and a planned project aimed at improving conditions for slum dwellers.

“Action is more important than discussion. Addressing the impacts of climate change requires collective effort,” he said. The KCC chief also mentioned measures to regulate the growing number of e-bikes in the city and stressed the importance of rehabilitation plans for communities affected by cyclones and river erosion.

The programme featured KCC CEO Rajib Ahmed as special guest, with Caritas Khulna Regional Director Albino Nath delivering the welcome speech. Assistant Professor Dr Mohammad Ismail Hossain of the Disaster Management Institute at KUET presented the keynote paper, while Caritas Technical Specialist Emmanuel Chayan Biswas also spoke.

Speakers noted that despite policy emphasis on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), a coordinated approach to protect displaced populations remains inadequate. The roundtable aimed to foster policy dialogue among government officials, development partners, researchers, civil society, and community leaders, focusing on expanding social protection coverage, improving coordination between DRR-CCA frameworks, and formulating inclusive, climate-resilient policies.

Officials from government and non-government organisations, students, journalists, NGO representatives, and community leaders attended the programme.
