A court in Mymensingh on Wednesday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing a man over a land dispute in 2023.
Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Farhana Ferdous delivered the verdict.
The convicts are Abdur Rashid, 41, son of Shukkur Ali; Jashim Uddin, 50; his wife Hurena Khatun; their son Riyad, 25; and Jonaki Akter, 38, daughter of Abdur Rashid. All are residents of Chakpara village in Trishal upazila.
The court also fined each of them Tk 50,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment, reports UNB.
According to the prosecution, a long-standing dispute over land ownership existed between Hafizul Islam and Jashim Uddin.
On June 19, 2023, Jashim’s supporters, armed with lethal weapons, attacked Hafizul’s house and assaulted Nurjahan Begum.
During the attack, Alamin—Hafizul’s nephew—was stabbed when he tried to intervene, and he died on the spot.
