A special court in Faridpur has acquitted six of the 12 accused in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over alleged corruption and an attempted embezzlement of Tk 10 crore in the procurement of equipment—including the widely discussed “curtain scam”—at Faridpur Medical College Hospital (FMCH).
Judge Md Sharif Uddin of the Special Judge’s Court passed the order on Monday after a hearing on charge framing.
The six individuals acquitted are: Associate Professor Mizanur Rahman of the hospital’s Surgery Department, former Professor Sheikh Abdul Fattah of the Medicine Department, Md Alamgir Fakir, Health and Education Officer at the Civil Surgeon’s Office, former Sub-Divisional Engineer Abdus Sattar of the Public Works Department, Social Service Officer Omar Faruk of the hospital, and engineer Mia Mortuza Hossain of NIMU & TC Dhaka headquarters.
Among the remaining six accused, two are currently absconding, and the other four are on bail.
In 2015, two contracting firms—Messrs Anik Traders and Messrs Ali Traders—supplied equipment worth Tk 10 crore for the launch of the ICU at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. When payments were not made, they sought legal remedy from the High Court.
The High Court directed the ACC to investigate the matter. Following the directive, ACC Assistant Director Md Mamun-ur-Rashid Chowdhury filed a case on November 27, 2019, initially accusing three doctors involved in the procurement committee and three contractors.
On July 9, 2023, the investigation officer, ACC Director Md Farid Hossain Patwari, submitted a charge sheet to the court, dropping the three doctors and adding 11 new individuals alongside the three contractors, naming a total of 14 accused.
However, on September 11, 2023, Special Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh rejected the charge sheet and ordered a reinvestigation.
Subsequently, ACC Assistant Director Md Benazir Ahmed submitted a revised charge sheet on August 31, 2025, naming 12 accused.
According to ACC Public Prosecutor Kubbad Hossain, Monday was set for charge framing based on this charge sheet. After the hearing, the court discharged six accused and ordered that charges be framed against the remaining six.
