Cheques have been distributed among families of victims who suffered enforced disappearance, killings, and inhumane torture during the tenure of the previous government in Khulna.

The cheques were handed over at an event organized by Khulna District Council on Saturday. Member of Parliament for Khulna-3 and Whip Rokibul Islam Bakul distributed the cheques to the beneficiaries.

A total of Tk 7.36 lakh was distributed among 73 families from Khulna city and district. This included 23 families of martyrs and 50 families of individuals who were injured, tortured, or are currently suffering from illness due to past persecution.

Addressing the function, the whip stated that over the past 17 years, a culture of enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings had been established across the country with the sole aim of silencing dissent.

He also alleged that the previous government had destroyed constitutional institutions to cling to power and turned the district council into a hub of corruption. Now, he said, as the council stands by affected citizens, democratic institutions are regaining their dignity.
