A mobile court in Dinajpur’s Nawabganj upazila on Friday sentenced three men to ond year in jail after six horses were slaughtered and the meat was being sold as beef.

The incident took place at around 10am in a betel nut orchard in the Gazipur area of Nawabganj upazila. The convicted men are from Netrokona, Nilphamari and Rangpur districts.

Nawabganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Jillur Rahman said authorities received information in the morning that several people were slaughtering horses in the orchard and preparing the meat for sale. A drive was then conducted at the scene, where horse meat from six horses was seized.

He said 3 people were arrested over their involvement in the incident and each was sentenced to 1 year in jail. The seized meat, weighing about 12 maunds, was buried and destroyed.

Locals expressed anger over the incident, saying authorities should investigate how a group could sell horse meat as beef and questioning what people were being served.
