A leader of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-Democratic) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Panchhari upazila of Khagrachhari on Friday morning.
The deceased was Nitidatta Chakma, 40, coordinator of the organisation’s Panchhari upazila unit.
The incident occurred around 8:30am in the Sutakarmpara area of Ultachhari union, said Ferdous Wahid, officer-in-charge of Panchhari Police Station.
He said miscreants opened fire on Nitidatta Chakma in the morning. Local residents rescued him in a bullet-injured condition and took him to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital before police arrived at the scene, where doctors declared him dead.
UPDF-Democratic blamed the faction of UPDF led by Prasit Khisa for the killing, though none of its leaders or activists agreed to speak on record.
However, the Prasit-led UPDF denied the allegation.
Speaking on the matter, one of its spokespersons, Angya Marma, said the incident occurred due to internal reasons within UPDF-Democratic.
“Our organisation is in no way involved,” he added.
