At least 20 passengers were injured after a tourist bus lost control and plunged into a deep hilly gorge in Bandarban early Sunday.
The accident occurred around 5am when a bus of Saudia Paribahan, carrying 40 passengers from Dhaka to Bandarban, reached the area adjacent to Bandarban University in the district, said Officer-in-Charge of Bandarban Sadar Police Station Md Shahed Parvez.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the bus lost control while descending a winding hilly slope and fell into the gorge, leaving most of the passengers seriously injured.
On information, locals and members of law enforcement agencies rescued the injured and took them to Bandarban Sadar Hospital. After receiving primary treatment, the victims were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Among the injured, Milon Chandra Das, 26, Rimon Das, 27, Riyad, 25, and Nafi Rijuan, 28, were reported to be in critical condition.
Emergency Medical Officer of Bandarban Sadar Hospital, Dr Dhiman Das, said most of the passengers were injured in the crash, with four in serious condition. “They were given primary treatment and later sent to Chittagong Medical College for better treatment,” he said.
