An attack and vandalism were allegedly carried out on a campaign vehicle of Jamaat-e-Islami’s parliamentary candidate Mohammad Shishir Manir in the Sunamganj-2 (Dirai–Shalla) constituency.

The incident took place on Thursday at around 7pm near Kadimpur village along the Dirai Dhal Road in Baramhawr. Two people — driver Tamim Mia, 23 and Selim Mia, 38, — were injured in the attack.

Upon receiving information, members of the police and the army visited the scene.

According to local sources, a campaign vehicle of Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated parliamentary candidate Mohammad Shishir Manir had been travelling to different locations and conducting promotional displays using a projector.

At around 6pm on Thursday, the vehicle was campaigning at Dhal Bazar in Tardol Union of Dirai upazila. Shortly afterwards, a procession in support of the BNP arrived at the spot and chanted various slogans near the campaign vehicle.

The procession participants allegedly intimidated those involved and asked them to stop the campaign and leave the area. The campaign was then halted, and the vehicle proceeded towards Dirai town. When it reached the Kadimpur area near Baram Hawor, around 10 to 12 individuals on several motorcycles reportedly attacked the vehicle from behind and vandalized it.

In protest against the attack on the campaign vehicle, Dirai upazila Jamaat-e-Islami and supporters of Shishir Monir brought out a protest procession on Thursday night, demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible.

The procession started from Dirai municipal point, marched through key roads of the town and ended at the Traffic Point intersection. A brief rally was held there, where speeches were delivered by Dirai upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Abdul Quddus, upazila Jamaat secretary Maulana Al Amin and supporters of the Daripalla symbol.

Dirai police station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque Chowdhury said police visited the scene after receiving reports of the attack and vandalism.

He added that appropriate action would be taken following an investigation once a complaint is received. Preparations are underway to file a case at Dirai Police Station and the situation is currently calm.
