BNP Acting Chairperson, Tarique Rahman, is set to visit Thakurgaon, drawing excitement from party leaders, workers, supporters, and a large section of the local population.
After 23 years, the district is eagerly awaiting a glimpse of its leader. In previous years, he had participated in Thakurgaon’s key BNP programs virtually from London.
According to district BNP sources, he is visiting to pay tribute to Raihanul Hasan, Al Mamun, Sahan Parvez, and Rakibul Hasan, who were killed during the July-August mass uprising, and to attend a memorial and prayer session for the party’s former chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
The district BNP said Tarique Rahman will arrive on Monday night and stay at the guest house of the Bureau Bangladesh Training Centre in Thakurgaon.
On Tuesday at 10am, he will visit the grave of Al Mamun. Although he had planned to visit the other three victims’ graves, time and logistical constraints will limit the visit to Al Mamun’s grave.
At 11am, he will attend a memorial and prayer session for Khaleda Zia at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School field, where he will address party leaders and activists. After the program, he will leave for the neighboring district of Panchagarh.
District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin said: “He will arrive by road on January 12, so the exact time of arrival in the city is not yet confirmed. The last time he visited Thakurgaon was during a blanket distribution program in the winter of 2003.”
District BNP General Secretary Paigam Ali said: “After 23 long years, Tarique Rahman’s arrival brings immense joy to party workers. We have held multiple preparatory meetings and informed the administration about security arrangements. Although election code restrictions prevent a large public rally, the memorial and prayer session for Khaleda Zia will be held successfully.”
BNP senior vice-president and freedom fighter Nur Karim said: “At this critical time for the country, Tarique will find in Zia the nationalist political vision of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and the strong, uncompromising leadership qualities of Khaleda Zia. We wish him a long life.”
Tarique Rahman has participated in several key Thakurgaon programs virtually in the past. Most recently, on September 7, 2025, he delivered a guideline-oriented speech as chief guest at the BNP Thakurgaon district biennial conference.
Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain said the district police have made all necessary arrangements to maintain law and order during Tarique Rahman’s visit and remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
