Armed Forces Day was observed at Shaheed Salahuddin Cantonment at Ghatail in Tangail on Friday through various programmes. As part of the programme, freedom fighters were accorded a reception in the afternoon.
Major General Hossain Al Morshed, GOC of 19 Infantry Division and Area Commander of Ghatail, welcomed the freedom fighters and other guests and later attended the programme as the chief guest.
Air Officer Commanding Shariful Islam of Bangladesh Air Force Base ‘Bir Uttam Sultan Mahmud’, freedom fighters, members of martyrs’ families, military and civil officials, former members of the armed forces and local dignitaries were also present.
In his speech, the chief guest said that alongside discharging their professional duties, members of the armed forces have always stood by the people at every critical juncture of the country. He highlighted the contribution of the armed forces to tackling disasters, combating terrorism in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, supporting the civil administration and participating in various nation-building activities.
He also underlined the role of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in United Nations peacekeeping missions, noting that their dedicated service has brightened the country’s image in the international arena.
