Around 5 million cubic feet of new gas is set to be added to the national grid from Well No. 1 of the Kailashtila gas field in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet after completion of workover operations on the old well.
Engineer Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik, acting managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), told the media that an official briefing on the matter may be held on Thursday night.
According to the gas field authorities, new reserves of about 5 million cubic feet of gas have been found in this well. Once formal extraction begins, the gas is expected to be supplied to the national grid within a couple of days.
SGFL sources said that BAPEX (Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited) began re-drilling this old well in August at a cost of around Tk73 crore. Gas has been discovered at a depth of 2,242 feet. Officials estimate that the well holds reserves of about 1,600 TCF of gas.
SGFL sources said that at present, 137 million cubic feet of gas from 16 wells under Sylhet Gas Fields are being supplied to the national grid. With 5 million cubic feet from Kailashtila-1, gas supply from these wells will reach 142 million cubic feet per day.
According to sources, from Kailashtila-1 well, 20 million cubic feet of gas were supplied to the national grid between 1986 and 1995. After remaining in operation until 1997, the well shut down. From 1998 to 2000, a further 20 million cubic feet of gas were added to the grid from this well.
In 2018, nine million cubic feet of gas were supplied, but extraction again stopped in 2019. With re-drilling beginning in August this year, officials now indicate that there is a prospect of adding another 5 million cubic feet of gas from this well to the national grid.
