Police have confirmed the identity of a dismembered body found inside two travel bags by the roadside near Station Road in Tongi, Gazipur.
The remains have been identified as those of Oli Mia, 36, son of Suruj Mia from the Narsingdi sadar police station area. He had been working as an assistant for Azmeri Paribahan. However, his head has not yet been recovered.
The travel bags were spotted around 10am on Friday by locals near Haji’s Biryani shop in the area. A foul odour coming from the bags prompted residents to inform the police.
Officers from Tongi East police station arrived at the scene and recovered several body parts wrapped in black polythene inside the bags.
The discovery of a dismembered, unidentified male body in travel bags has caused panic among local residents. Many suspect that the perpetrators took advantage of the poor street lighting during the night to commit the crime and flee undetected.
Officer-in-charge of Tongi East police station, Muhammad Faridul Islam, said that with assistance from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), they were able to identify the victim as Oli Mia through fingerprint analysis.
