Three people, including a child, were killed and 50 others injured after a bus plunged into a pond at Deuti Beltola in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district on Thursday.
Police said a bus carrying a wedding party of the Hindu community was coming from Gaibandha to Nazir Haat area of Rangpur city. Around 2am, when it reached Deuti Saidpur area, it collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. As a result, the bus fell into a roadside ditch, killing two people on the spot.
At least 20 people were injured. When the injured were taken to Pirgacha Upazila Health Complex, one more person died while undergoing treatment there.
The deceased are Santa Rani, 50, Amrita Pal, 80, and Hiblu, 35. Upon receiving the news, police and fire service personnel quickly arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies of the deceased, and rescued the injured, admitting them to Pirgacha Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Hospital sources said the condition of four of the injured is critical.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgacha Police Station, Nure Alam Siddique, confirmed that 3 people were killed in the accident involving the wedding party bus. He said the bus was returning from Gaibandha after completing the wedding ceremony with the newlywed bride on board.
The bus driver was driving at high speed, and in the collision with the truck coming from the opposite direction, the bus fell off the road into a ditch, resulting in three deaths. Among the injured are the newly married groom and bride and their condition is not out of danger.
