A Chittagong University student drowned while bathing at the Himchari point of Cox’s Bazar sea beach on Tuesday morning.

Two of his friends are still missing.

The incident took place around 10am.

The deceased was identified as Sadman Rahman Sabab, 21, son of KM Anisur Rahman from Mirpur, Dhaka.

The missing students are Aritra Hasan, son of Aminul Islam from Bogra, and Asif Ahmed, son of Rafiqul Islam from Bogra.

According to Imtiaz Ahmed, an official of Sea Safe Lifeguard, the five friends had come to Cox’s Bazar for a trip. All are students of the 2023–24 session in the Development Studies department at Chittagong University.

In the morning, they visited Himchari beach. While two of them sat on top of a seawall, the other three went down to bathe. A sudden strong wave swept them into the sea. Tourists nearby managed to recover Sabab’s body, but the other two remain unaccounted for.

Imtiaz added that the sea was rough due to rain and adverse weather conditions. Fire service personnel, tourist police, and lifeguards are continuing rescue efforts.

Tourist Police Additional DIG Apel Mahmud confirmed the recovery of Sabab’s body and said search operations are underway to locate the other two students.
