Home Affairs Adviser Lt General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has condemned the incident of mob action during the detention of former election commissioner Nurul Huda, calling it “unacceptable.”
He added that if any member of law enforcement were involved in the incident, legal action would be taken following a thorough investigation.
The adviser made the statement on Monday morning while speaking to journalists after visiting the Mouchak Horticulture Centre in Kaliakair, Gazipur.
He also addressed rumours about the arrest of former chief election commissioner Habibul Awal, clarifying that the reports were inaccurate. “Habibul Awal has not been arrested. It was former chief election commissioner Nurul Huda who was detained from Uttara,” he said.
On policy matters, Chowdhury mentioned that the government is working on formulating an Agricultural Land Protection Act to prevent the illegal occupation of farmland. He stressed the importance of increasing the production of local fruits alongside foreign ones to ensure native varieties are preserved.
After touring various areas of the horticulture centre, he gave directives to officials and staff.

Responding to questions about the rising number of robbery cases in Gazipur, he said police numbers and surveillance would be increased to curb such crimes.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr Chowdhury Javed Sadeq, Kaliakair UNO Kawsar Ahmed, and senior officials from the police and the Ministry of Agriculture were present during the visit.
