Following the controversy surrounding the arrest of Begum Rokeya University Assistant Professor Mahmudul Haque in a controversial case, Rangpur city’s Hajirhat police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Al Mamun Shah has been transferred.
Mamun was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police on Saturday night, sources said.
Meanwhile, RMP Commissioner Md Majid Ali said that the transfer was an administrative decision and not linked to Mahmudul’s arrest.
The commissioner added that DB Inspector Rajibul Islam has been appointed the new OC of Hajirhat police station.
Meanwhile, students of Begum Rokeya University and relatives of Mahmudul Haque staged a human chain and protest at the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Sunday, demanding his immediate release, withdrawal of the “false” case in which he is an accused and action against Mamun.
Notably, Mamun stands accused of registering a murder case on false grounds, 10 months after grocer Somes Uddin’s reported heart attack death.
Police arrested Mahmudul in the case.
Mahmudul was later sent to jail following a court order.
Although police submitted an application to the court on Friday to implicate Mahmudul in this case, the application was later withdrawn on Sunday, as confirmed by a court official (GRO).
On Sunday around 11am, over 100 students of Begum Rokeya University began a human chain and protest in front of the court, holding banners and festoons with various demands, including the immediate release of Mahmudul, withdrawal of the false murder charge, and legal action against Mamun Shah and other complicit police officers.
Around 11:30am, Mahmudul’s wife, Masuba Hasan Moon, and their elder son, Maimun Meheran, joined the protest alongside relatives.
