An illegal factory producing banned polythene in Kapasia, Gazipur, has been sealed and shut down by the district administration.
The factory owner, Abdul Awal, 44, has been sentenced to three months’ simple imprisonment under the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995.
The mobile court was conducted on Thursday morning by Executive Magistrate and Land Acquisition Officer of the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Ishtiak Ahmed, who delivered the verdict.
It was revealed that Abdul Awal had been operating the illegal factory for a long time at Rautkona Mor area under Sadar Union of Kapasia Upazila.
Acting on a complaint, a raid was carried out at the site.
During the operation, it was found that the factory was producing banned polythene using plastic pellets.
The polythene, raw materials and production machinery were seized from the site.
Executive Magistrate Ishtiak Ahmed said: “The production of banned polythene at this factory was causing severe damage to the environment and public health. Hence, the factory was sealed and the owner sentenced in accordance with the law.”
Kapasia Police assisted in the operation.
Later, Abdul Awal was sent to Gazipur District Jail under police custody.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Salma Akter, informed that such drives by the district administration to protect the environment will continue in the future.
