An indiscriminate shooting in Rupganj, Narayanganj, during an attempt to free a banned Chhatra League leader left businessman Mamun injured, who later died during treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, local residents apprehended the Chhatra League leader, subjected him to a public beating and handed him over to the police.
The incident took place in the afternoon in the Majhipara area of Bhulta union under the upazila.
The deceased, Mamun, was the son of Abdul Mannan from Majhipara in Bhulta, Rupganj.
According to local sources, Officer-in-Charge (Intelligence) of Rupganj police station, Salahuddin Kader, said that after the Awami League government was ousted on August 5, Sabbir Hossain Khoka — the organizational secretary of the now-banned Chhatra League's unit in Bhulta, went into hiding.
In recent days, he had reentered the area and was allegedly involved in various illicit activities.
On the day of the incident, he was apprehended by members of the Bhulta union unit of Jubo Dal, led by its organizational secretary Badol, along with local residents.
The OC added that upon receiving news of Khoka’s detention, identified criminal Zaidul Islam Babu, who is the nephew of Mahbub, convenor of the district unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, opened fire with a pistol in an attempt to rescue him.
During the gunfire, Mamun, a businessman dealing in LPG cylinders, was shot.
As the locals rallied and chased him, Babu fled the scene.
The agitated crowd then subjected Khoka to a public beating and turned him over to Rupganj police.
The police official further said that Mamun, who sustained critical bullet injuries, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 9pm while undergoing treatment.
Later that night, the victim’s elder brother, Badol, filed a case at Rupganj police station, naming 16 individuals as accused.
