A member of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) detained by locals for illegal intrusion at the Jahurpur border in Narayanpur union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila and later handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh on Wednesday morning has been returned to the Indian side.

The detained BSF member, Ganesh Murti, is from India’s Nurpur 71 BSF camp, confirmed a press release sent to the media Lt Col Fahad Mahmud Rinku, commanding officer of the 53 BGB.

Nazir Hossain, chairman of Narayanpur union parishad in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila, said that the villagers of Satrosia, a village under Jahurpur BOP of the 53rd Battalion, detained the BSF member.

He continued: "Since the village is close to the Indian border, cattle like cows and goats often stray into Indian territory. BSF personnel frequently chase these animals. Around 7:30am, a BSF member entered Bangladesh while chasing goats. Locals detained him and informed the BGB. Later, BGB personnel arrived and took the BSF member to their camp."

According to the BGB, a patrol team from Jahurpur BOP of Chapainawabganj Battalion (53 BGB) rescued a BSF member, identified as Senior Constable Ganesh Murti of Nurpur Camp under the 71st Battalion of BSF, from locals at Satrosia, a bordering area of Narayanpur union inside Bangladesh.

He was found in an intoxicated state and in possession of arms and ammunition. He was then taken into BGB custody, BGB said.

At 11:30am, a flag meeting was held between company commanders of the BGB and BSF, and the detained BSF member was handed over as per protocol, it added.

During the meeting, BGB strongly protested the illegal intrusion.
